THE PRESENCE OF THE FCO IN THE FALKLAND ISLANDS

His Excellency the Governor of the Falkland Islands has many different roles to play.  He is the constitutional head of the Falkland Islands Government.  He is the official representative of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.  He is Commissioner for the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.  He is also an employee of the British Government, a diplomat in the service of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

It is the Governor's responsibility on the one hand to communicate the wishes of Falkland Islanders to the British Government, but on the other hand to act as the voice of the British Government in the Falkland Islands.  He lies at the heart of the constitutional relationship between the Government of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and the Government of its Overseas Territory of the Falkland Islands.

The Governor is assisted in his responsibilities by the First Secretary (a diplomat who deputises as Acting Governor in his absence) and by two other staff members from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.  Two further officers are employed by the Government of South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands to manage its affairs, along with a local receptionist and driver.

The building of Government House was started in 1845 by Lt. Richard Moody, the first Governor of the Falkland Islands.  It opened as offices in 1847.  Governor Moore was the first Governor to take up residence in the building, in 1859.  Over the years various Governors have been responsible for further building works.  The main house now provides the Governor's official residence, with the western wing being converted into offices for the Governor and all his staff.  The First Secretary's House (built in 1998) is situated immediately to the west.  The Government House gardens are famed for their produce, which includes grapes from the conservatory.
