FALKLANDS LANDHOLDINGS CORPORATION

Falklands Landholdings Corporation owns and runs the farms of Fitzroy, Goose Green, Walker Creek and North Arm.

In 1991 these farms were sold by the Falkland Islands Company Limited to the Falkland Islands Government, and ownership of the farms (and employment of the farm employees) was transferred to a new company incorporated for the purpose and wholly owned by the Falkland Islands Government called Falklands Landholdings Limited.

In 2000, when it became clear that leading the way for the Falkland Islands in agricultural diversification and experimentation was not necessarily consistent with the obligations of company directors to maximise profits, a new statutory corporation was incorporated under the provisions of the Falklands Landholdings Corporation Ordinance.  Ownership of the farms (and employment of the farm employees) was transferred to Falklands Landholdings Corporation by Falklands Landholdings Limited which was subsequently wound-up.

The Corporation has power:-
(a)  to carry on business as farmers, agriculturalists, nurserymen, and horticulturalists;
(b)  to develop any land owned or leased by it, and to engage in and carry on whether or not with a view to profit or economic return any rural development (including social, cultural and economic development);
(c)  to undertake for the benefit of the agricultural community of the Falkland islands and whether with a view to profit or economic return or not, marketing activities in the Falkland Islands and overseas, field trials, stud farming and the provision of seed stock and stud stock.

The Corporation's objectives are notified to it by the Governor on the advice of Executive Council.  The Corporation must not do anything which it knows to be contrary to any policy or political directive decided upon by Executive Council.

The governing Board of the Corporation consists of:-
*  the Chief Executive of the Falkland Islands Government
*  the General Manager of the Corporation
*  two Legislative Councillors
*  two members of the farming community appointed by the Governor, one after consultation with the Rural Business Association;
*  two members of the non-agricultural business community appointed by the Governor, one after consultation with the Falkland Islands Chamber of Commerce

The Financial Secretary of the Falkland Islands Government (or his representative) and the Secretary of the Corporation may attend meetings of the Board and may speak to any matter before the Board, but may not vote.
