TO WEDDELL

by Trudi Felton

Tranquillity…
The silence of solitude
Broken only by Nature's breathing.
The sigh of the wind through the white grass…
The gentle laughter of a stream
As it flows beneath a stone-run
Evading discovery

Freedom…
Reckless, joyous swoop of the petrels
To dip a wingtip and skim daringly across the wave tops.
The calm serenity of the graceful albatross,
Riding the currents
Above their wave-washed cliff top homes.

Beauty…
Rocky crags above a sunny, fern-strewn valley.
Foaming ocean-fingers sculpting glistening white sands.
The ecstatic leap of a dolphin
Rejoicing in simplicity…
Echoing my fierce, joy-filled pride
Of my beautiful island home.

Our thanks to Trudi,
a Falkland Islander now living in New Zealand,
for sending us this evocative poem
