TRAVEL TIPS

1.   Bring sufficient funds with you.  Visitors are advised to carry some currency in American Dollars in case the flight is diverted to South America or North Africa.  UK cheques can be cashed (for a fee), credit cards have limited acceptance and there are no ATMs.  UK Sterling can be used locally.  Don't forget the £20 sterling departure tax.

2.   Beware of weather changes.  The weather can change rapidly and it is often possible to experience many seasons in a single day.  Sunlight can be very bright and the wearing of good sunglasses, hats and a high factor sunscreen is recommended.

3.   Be properly insured.  Ensure that you are fully covered for any unexpected medical treatment, hospitalisation or medical evacuation.

4.   Pack a good windproof jacket with a hood.

5.   Pay attention to the mines briefing on arrival and follow the guidelines when travelling round the Islands.  Do not enter a minefield in any circumstances.

6.   Don't get involved with drugs.  The Islands have a No Tolerance policy towards all illegal drugs.  Offenders found in possession of any illegal drugs including 'soft' drugs will be dealt with severely.

7.  Don't forget that flights via South America will mean an overnight hotel stay in Santiago.  Passengers on RAF flights (or MOD chartered flights) who have to overnight on Ascension Island do so free of charge in basic shared accommodation.

8.   Don't forget that yellow fever inoculation is recommended for passengers travelling on RAF flights (or MOD chartered flights) via Ascension Island, as it may be necessary for flights to divert to risk areas.  For the same reason, additional precautions against malaria should also be considered.  You should seek advice from your doctor.

9.   Don't expect to obtain casual holiday work.  It is illegal to carry out paid employment without first obtaining a work permit.

10.   Don't forget that all visitors arriving in the Falkland Islands must be in possession of a valid passport, a return ticket, pre-booked accommodation and sufficient funds.  Any national requiring a visa to enter the United Kingdom also requires a visa to enter the Falkland Islands.  Visas must be obtained prior to travel.
