Text - TERRITORIAL SEA - UK Statement

MADRID - 19 OCTOBER 1989

The following is the text of an on-the-record statement delivered on 19 October 1989 by Sir Crispin Tickell following the joint press conference in Madrid at which the joint British and Argentine Statement was issued.

“In my discussions with the Head of the Argentine Delegation, I informed him of the intention of the British Government to extend the breadth of the territorial sea around certain dependent territories in the Atlantic and the Caribbean, including the Falkland Islands and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, from three to twelve nautical miles.  We expect these changes to come into effect at an early date to be announced.”

Our thanks to the Falkland Islands Government for supplying a copy of the Agreement
